Lampton School - Week 3

Posted on Sep 18th 2023

Monday 18th September

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the second week of the Autumn Term 2023. It’s Week A.  Ms Kapila and Mr Smale are leading our whole school assemblies focusing on the Lampton character trait of ‘kindness’ and how we can display this in all of our interactions on a daily basis.

Next Tuesday - 26th September - is our annual Open Evening for students wishing to join Lampton School in Y7 in September 2024. We are heavily oversubscribed and have been consistently so for a significant number of years. For the current Y7 who have just started at Lampton, we received 1271 applications for the 240 places on offer. Next Tuesday, school will finish for students in all year groups at 12.30pm. If your child/children are helping with the event, you will receive communication about this separately. Please note that on Wednesday 27th September, school starts at the slightly later time of 9.00am with lessons as usual from 9.10am.

Thursday 28th September is an INSET Day for staff. The school site will be closed for all students that day.

Our enrichment programme has already started and this week sees Y8 students visiting Littlehampton as part of their studies in Geography. Your child’s form tutor and their Google Year Team page will also have details of the extracurricular offer available to students this year. Please do ask them about it.

With best wishes for the week ahead.

Safeguarding update: vaping

In recent years there has been a massive increase in the number of students (both in this school and nationally) who have taken up 'vaping'. Vapes are prohibited for under-18s, but yet we know that many shops locally will sell to children. Vapes are harmful and addictive - the 'juice' typically contains nicotine. Vapes are prohibited items, and students found possessing them will spend time in the Reflection Room, with parents contacted.  We are aware that toilets are a 'hotspot', and the main building, dining hall and 6th form have now all been installed with vape detectors - which are proving to be an effective deterrent. We also educate students about the dangers of vaping through PSHE and the tutor programme. This article contains helpful guidance for parents to talk to their children about the dangers of vaping.

Building character and cultural capital - events in the local area…

A Sister Act for Black History Month

Hounslow Council will host an event at Hounslow House on Wednesday, 4 October, in honour of Black History Month.

Celebrating Our Sisters has been co-designed by local One Hounslow Community Star winners The Ghanaian Community Forum and the Council’s own Equalities team.

There are also a host of other local groups involved including SHEWISE, Southall Black Sisters, ILAYS, WELGA and national organisation Soul Purpose 360.

The theme echoes that of Black History Month 2023 and seeks to highlight the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change and building communities.

The event features a vibrant marketplace of over twenty stalls featuring community groups and Council teams and will include input from keynote speakers Yvonne Lawson, MBE and Lorraine Jones, who have both lost sons to knife crime.

A round table on black sisterhood will conclude an afternoon of community and celebration.
