Mobile phones
In September 2025 we made changes to our approach to student mobile phones in response to growing concerns about the impact of mobile phone use on student learning, behaviour, and wellbeing.
At Lampton School, we are committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and focused learning environment. While we recognise that mobile phones can be a useful tool for communication and learning when used appropriately, misuse during the school day can cause significant disruption. We have also seen a high number of issues in school from social media sites like Snapchat and TikTok that are being accessed at home and used inappropriately.
Confiscation Procedure : 2026-27
Year 7 and Year 8: No smartphones will be allowed at all. This was discussed at Primary Transfer Interviews and we know parents are also concerned about mobile phones and support this. If your child is in Year 7 or 8 and they bring a smartphone or smart watch into school it will be confiscated until half term. We will conduct searches of students to ensure they are adhering to this policy.
Year 9-13: To ensure consistency and reinforce expectations, the following procedures will now apply if we see or hear a mobile phone (this includes in their trouser pocket) or a student uses a phone inappropriately or without permission, at any time of day on the school site.
- The phone will be confiscated and stored securely in the school safe for 5 working days (a week).
- We will call and let the parent/guardian know it has been confiscated.
- The student will be issued a community service which will take place on the day of confiscation.
If your child is in Year 12 and 13 they are allowed to use their mobile phones in the Sixth Form Centre only at break and lunchtimes.
Our approach is informed by government policy, recent research, an increase in incidents in mobile phones and the strong links between phone use, mental health issues and academic performance. As per our behaviour policy if a mobile phone has been used as part of a serious incident the phone can be confiscated for much longer periods of time. We are asking for your support in ensuring your child understands and respects the updated rules. If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call the school Reception. If your child needs to speak to you in an emergency during the school day they can only do this in Student Services.
