Lampton School - Week 2

Posted on Sep 11th 2023

Monday 11th September

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the second week of the Autumn Term 2023. It’s Week B, so Year Assemblies are taking place - these are being led by me, Mr Bates (Deputy Headteacher) and Ms Kapila (Assistant Headteacher) focusing on our expectations and routines as a school community. In particular, I’d like to draw your attention to the following key points:

  • Attendance and Punctuality:  our expectation at Lampton is that all students aim to achieve at least 96% attendance at school - 100% would be even better - so that they can maximise their potential. If students are late after the Register closes at 9.10am they are marked as absent for the morning session. Being on time to school is vital for success - students should be on-site for 8.30am, ready for Registration at 8.40am.

  • Mobile phones - our rule is simple. If they are seen or heard on-site they are confiscated until the end of the day.

  • Uniform - wearing the correct uniform shows pride, self-respect and respect for our school community; uniform must be worn to and from school every day. The only jewellery permitted is: a single stud earring in each ear and a wrist watch. The kara is the only form of jewellery of religious significance permitted. Full details of our Uniform Policy can be found on the school website.

All of our rules and expectations are rooted in our school’s three core values of excellence, respect and integrity. Striving for excellence by being the best version of ourselves, respecting all members of our large and diverse community and developing self-regulation and maturity by acting with integrity - doing the right thing.

I am pleased to report that students have made an excellent start to the term, in particular our new Y7 who accrued over 1, 000 achievement points in the space of their first three days as Lamptonians. A fantastic start!

With best wishes for the week ahead.

Stephen Davis

Safeguarding Briefing

The health risk that vaping poses for young people has been highlighted extensively in the media in the past year. We are taking the opportunity in assembly this week to remind students that vapes and e-ciggarettes are prohibited in the school site, and where we suspect that a student may be in possession they will be searched and parents contacted. Any student found with a vape will spend a day in the Reflection Room. We have also recently installed vape detectors in the toilet areas, and these have proved to be an effective deterrent. This article shares some important insights for parents who may be worried about their child vaping.

Open Evening

A reminder that our Open Evening takes place on Tuesday 26th September, from 5.00pm to 7.30pm. All Sixth Form students will be expected to attend as guides for prospective students and their families. The school will be closing early at 12.30pm to facilitate the event.

Attendance

It is imperative that your child attends school on a full time basis and, at Lampton, our minimum target for attendance is 96%. It is your legal responsibility to ensure your child attends school regularly from the ages of five years to sixteen years.

Every three weeks, families are contacted with their child’s individual attendance percentage. This is sent to contact one on our parent/carer communication system. Students below 90% are considered to be persistently absent and those below 50% are severely absent and all cases will be monitored closely with follow up actions by the school and for families. This may include a referral to the Student Support Advisory Service which could lead to fines for parents/carers and, in the most serious cases, prosecution.

If you have concerns regarding your child’s attendance, you should be proactive in reporting this to your child’s Head of Year so support can be put in place to help your child return to school as soon as possible.

Please note that term time leave is not authorised and all medical or dental appointments should take place outside of school hours.

ParentPay

We are a cash-free school, and we ask families to use ParentPay to pay for school meals, trips and other payments throughout the year. For your child to eat at school they will need to have credit on their ParentPay account to use.

Please note that Free School Meal (FSM) allowances can be spent at lunch time only; for your child to buy food at breakfast or breaktime, or to buy additional food at lunchtime, they will need additional credit from you.

There was a network issue last week that may mean your child’s spending from Thursday and Friday appears on their account this week.

Free porridge is served every morning, and if a child is hungry at lunchtime but has no credit or FSM allowance we will give them a small simple sandwich so that they have something to eat.

Lockers

Lockers are available for students to rent on the first and second floors of the Main Building, on the ground floor of the Spring Grove building and in the Communications Centre. A locker could be useful for storing books, sports kit, a coat, food or valuables. There’s no key to lose, just a secure code to remember. To rent a locker, visit www.locker.rentals and search ‘Lampton’.

Focus on extracurricular activities

This academic year  we will be continuing to expand our extra curricular offerings to provide students with as many opportunities to develop their character outside of lessons. These will be wide ranging and include sports, art, music, drama and much more. The extra curricular timetable will be posted around the school at the start of term and we encourage students to attend as many clubs as possible!
