Lampton School - Week 6

Posted on Oct 10th 2022

Monday 10th October

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the sixth week of the Autumn Term 2022. It’s Week A and our character focus for this fortnight is ‘organisation’. Our whole school assemblies this week are being led by Mr Matsvai and students, introducing our celebrations of Black History Month.

Last Thursday was our annual Open Evening for students in Y6 moving to Y7 in 2023. The evening was incredibly successful, with record breaking attendance and some exceptional feedback from visitors to our school. My thanks to all staff and students for their support and hard work in making the event such a success.

We have an important revision newsletter for Y11 students and their families - the Pre-Public Exams are on the horizon straight after the half-term break. We also have important information about Free School Meal vouchers and the safeguarding briefing features important information on vaping and searches. Please do take time to read this information with your child/children.

Please also see this link for more information regarding vacancies for two Parent Trustees - we are looking in particular for parents with experience in the fields of HR, finance and health and safety. The link gives further information and the deadline for nominations is 31st October 2022. If you wish to know more about this opportunity please contact my PA, Mrs Sehgal, and she can arrange a time for us to have a conversation.

Finally, a reminder that hoodies should not be worn to school under any circumstances. These will be confiscated!

Many thanks for your support and best wishes for the week ahead.

Black History Month

In the UK October has celebrated Black History Month since 1987. This national celebration aims to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.

People from African and Caribbean backgrounds have been a fundamental part of British history for centuries. However, campaigners believe their value and contribution to society is often overlooked, ignored or distorted. Black History Month gives everyone the opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.

At Lampton, we are celebrating Black History Month in whole school assembly this week (led by Mr Matsvai and students), and with the following events:

  • BHM History Walk
  • Library display celebrating black authors
  • Form time resources during registration
  • Curriculum focus in lessons
  •  BHM focus in extra-curricular activities
  • Musical trip
  • Y7&8 Poetry competition

Free School Meal vouchers - half term

Please note that if your child is in receipt of free school meals, then we will send out a voucher for October half term via email  on Friday 22nd October.

Safeguarding Briefing - Vaping and Searches

THe past decade has seen a decline in the number of teenagers smoking tobacco based products. However, there has in recent years been a surge in students ‘vaping’ - experimenting with ‘vapes’ or e-cigarettes. While these may not be as harmful as tobacco based products, ‘vapes’ do contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive and harmful substance. Whilst it is illegal for Under-18s to purchase ‘vapes’, we are aware that there are some unscrupulous shops that are willing to sell these to children.

The school policy is that any student found with a vape in their possession will spend a day in the Reflection Room. Where we suspect that a student has a vape, we will search students’ possession. The government recently released new guidance on how we conduct searches, and parents will always be contacted after the search. We also encourage parents to be vigilant. In the past few weeks Heads of Years have addressed the harmful effects of vaping and reiterated school policy in year group assemblies.
