Lampton School - Week 27

Monday 15th April 2024

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the first week of the Summer Term 2024 - and the last half-term of our academic year 2023-24; a reminder that at Lampton all year groups are promoted after the May half-term. It’s Week A and our assemblies, being led by Mr Bates (Deputy Headteacher) are focusing on the positive impact of immigration to the UK and the importance of British Values.

We are now well and truly in the countdown period until the Public Examinations begin on 9th May. Every second counts for students in Years 11 and 13, so punctual attendance at school each day and every single lesson is an imperative. This week also sees our students in Key Stage 3 sitting formal examinations in the Sports Hall in their core subjects. Students have been briefed in lessons as to what is required and this is a vital time to practise the habits required for sitting examination in a formal setting.

As reported before the holiday, we are in the season of year group Celebration Evenings and we look forward to seeing a great turn out next Tuesday, 23rd April, for the Y8 event.

Our updated expectations with respect to mobile phones in school starts today - a reminder that phones must not be seen or heard on the school site, and this includes outside of school hours. Mobiles must be switched off on site and stored in a student’s bag. If you need to contact your child during the school day for an urgent reason, please contact Reception on 020 8572 1936 or enquiries@lampton.org.uk and the message will be relayed. It is not acceptable to call your child on their mobile, or message them, during the school day and vice versa. Thank you for your support with this matter - our expectations are based on the recently published guidance by the Government.

With best wishes for the week ahead.

Stephen Davis

Safeguarding briefing: The risks of mobile phones

How much time does your child spend on their phone? Do you know what you child is doing online? How does their phone use impact on their relationships with their peers, and on their self-esteem and mental health? These are all questions that are being asked increasingly often due to concerns about emerging evidence about the negative effects of mobile phone use by young people. Prof Jonathan Haidt has written extensively about the unprecedented damaging effects that mobile phones have on young people.

At Lampton School, we often see young people who have accessed inappropriate content, or have engaged or are the victim of online bullying. We strongly recommend that parents delay purchasing a smartphone for as long as possbile, and then if you do to limit daily use and always monitor the phone use. We have today updated our mobile phone policy to further tighten our controls at school and increase the effectiveness of our enforcement: phones should always be switched off on site, and should never be seen or heard. If they are, they will be confiscated immediately.
