Lampton School - Week 15

Posted on Dec 18th 2023

Monday 18th December

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the fifteenth, and final, week of the Autumn Term 2023.  It’s Week A and I have been leading our whole school assemblies with a focus on celebration and viewing current world events, particularly those in the Middle East, through the lens of the Christmas story.

It was great to see so many families at the Y11 Parents’ Evening last Thursday, where attendance was in excess of 90%. It was good to hear how useful families are finding the SIMS app in supporting their child’s education. If you have yet to download it or have any questions, please contact the school via parentapp@lampton.org.uk

We have had another very successful term at Lampton. Highlights include:

  • GCSE progress placing the school in the top 10% of all schools nationally

  • Specifically:

    • Mathematics the top 3% of schools

    • Science the top 5% of schools

    • EBacc subjects, the top 8% of schools

This is an amazing accolade for our school, our students and their families.

In November we had an external review of the school by Challenge Partners. Their feedback highlighted:

  • All members of the Lampton community understand what is expected of them

  • Students’ progress is amongst the best in the country

  • Students have positive attitudes right from the start of the day

  • Strongly embedded routines ensure that learning time is maximised

As you will be aware, this term we have had a concerted drive to enhance our extra-curricular offer for students. As a result, each week there are over 40 different extra-curricular activities and clubs taking place in the school.

The school Christmas Lunch takes place on Wednesday 20th December.

School ends at 12:30pm on Thursday 21st December and students must vacate the school site and the vicinity of the school immediately.

At the end of this very long term, my thanks to all staff for their hard work and commitment to our students. My thanks to all families for their continued support of the school and its work.

On behalf of myself, the staff and Trust Board may I wish you a peaceful and relaxing break.

The Spring Term begins at 8:40am on Monday 8th January 2024.

Lampton is a reading school!

At Lampton we pride ourselves on being a reading school.

By this we mean that we read for pleasure everyday. Students at Lampton from year 7 until 13 are required to bring a reading book with them everyday - they will read it during registration, where we set aside time for just this purpose.

The reasons are simple. Those that read better, do better. Not just in English but all subjects.

Reading improves your vocabulary, your ability to discuss and cognitive response. So when you read, your maths gets better too!

The other great thing about reading is that it can take you to a new world, where adventures await.

Starting the day by reading is a great antidote to stress and from the students’ point of view, nearly the only time that they get to choose what they do at school!

We are fortunate at Lampton to have the most amazing library with two incredibly knowledgeable librarians, eager to share their thoughts with our students. In year 7 and 8 students have lessons timetabled in the library, other years can visit before, during their break and afterschool.

How can you help?
This is easy too.

Ask your child what they are reading, why they enjoy it and what’s next for them?
This helps them see how important we all believe it is. It also helps us to work out if their book is appropriate for them.

We thought it would be a good idea to suggest some reading options for your child, as for many of us reading younger fiction was a long time ago and much has changed!

Each week we will put forward an idea that might help make those decisions. At Lampton we believe that you should read something that challenges you, but most importantly you find enjoyable. As JK Rowling the author of the Harry Potter novels once said. "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book." Put down that old dusty novel and try one of these!

KS3 : A masterpiece for young readers - clever plot, interesting characters and so many twists - if you’ve not read it you must.

KS4: Year 10 and 11 students will likely be reading Boys Don't Cry for GCSE. This novel by the same author will help compliment it.  Romance and intrigue that explores the complexities of race.

KS5: Older readers and adults will love this twisting plot set in Northern Carolina. Recently turned into a blockbuster movie.
