How to help your child

Unit 1: Human Lifespan and Development

Students examine physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan, the interaction between biological and social factors in health and well-being and how health care professionals provide effective care.

The unit is assessed through one examination of 80 marks lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. Students are assessed through multiple-choice, short- and long-answer questions. The questions will assess knowledge and understanding of human growth and development through the life stages; application of knowledge of the factors affecting human growth and development across each life stage and making connections between lifestyle factors and health inequalities; and evaluation and analysis of health and social care workers and how they promote, prevent and treat health conditions at different life stages.

The exam for this will take place in May at the end of Year 12.  Please ensure that your child is fully prepared for this exam because it is worth 25% of the overall qualification.

Unit 2: Human Biology and Health

Students explore the organisation, structure and normal physiological functioning of the human body, and the effect on health of common disorders of the body systems.

The unit is assessed through one examination of 80 marks lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. Students are assessed through multiple-choice, short and long-answer questions. The questions will assess knowledge and understanding of the structure, organisation and function of the human body and common disorders that affect it; application of knowledge on the structure and function of body systems to the primary and secondary effects of common disorders on those body systems; and connections between the primary and secondary effects of common disorders and how they affect interlinked body systems.

The exam for this will take place in May at the end of Year 12.  Please ensure that your child is fully prepared for this exam because it is worth 25% of the overall qualification.

The unit is assessed using a Pearson set the assignment, with the assignment taking the form of a project/essay/presentation. Preparation, planning and research is carried out during lessons and independently study.  Students need to ensure that they are fully prepared for these prior to the assessment starting.  Please ensure that your child meets the deadlines for these internal assessments and work is as detailed and thorough as possible. What careers can success in Health and Social care lead to?

Health and Social Care develops a wide range of subject-specific knowledge and skills that are essential for working with individuals in health, social, and community settings. Students learn about human development across the life stages, including physical, intellectual, emotional, and social changes. Students also gain an understanding of various health conditions and how they affect individuals’ daily lives. Key areas such as safeguarding, health and safety legislation, and infection control are also covered, helping learners understand the importance of working safely and ethically. A strong focus is placed on care values, such as respect, dignity, and promoting equality and inclusion, along with the importance of effective communication and building positive relationships. Learners also develop practical and transferable skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and reflective practice. This knowledge and skill set prepares students for a variety of careers, including roles such as nurse, midwife, social worker, care worker, paramedic, occupational therapist, youth worker, or mental health support worker. It can also lead to further study in fields like nursing, social work, public health, or counselling at university or through vocational training and apprenticeships.
