Lampton School - Week 8

Posted on Oct 30th 2023

Monday 30th October

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the eighth week of the Autumn Term 2023. I hope you and your families had a good half-term break. It is Week B and year assemblies, being led by students, are taking place focusing on the theme of Diwali - the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Next week we will be holding our whole school assemblies on the theme of Remembrance - and this year in particular thinking about the innocent, civilian, victims of conflict. This is especially pertinent at this time with the conflict in the Middle East and the impact this may be having on members of our school community. There is some more information about this below - please do take time to read it.

Y11 have started their Pre-Public Exams (PPEs) today and we wish them the best of luck. Two further key dates for Y11 are the Sixth Form Open Evening which takes place on Thursday 9th November at 5pm and Y11 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 14th December when we will be giving feedback on performance in the PPEs. A reminder that the school expects all parents to attend Parents’ Evenings in each year group as these provide an essential opportunity to discuss your child’s progress in person.

A new system of monitoring students’ punctuality to school and lessons commences on Wednesday 1st November. If a student is late to school or lessons during the day, they will be required to attend Community Service at the end of that same day. There are more details below and the system will be explained in assemblies this week. Being on time is a crucial life skill as well as showing our Lampton values of respect for yourself and others while showing integrity by doing the right thing. Every minute in school counts towards success and achievement.

Attendance wise, Y12 have regained the top spot with 96.8% attendance followed by Y8 on 96.3% and Y7 on 95.8%. A reminder that the attendance target for all students is 96%.

On Thursday 19th October, the Department for Education published this year’s School Performance Tables for the end of KS4. I am pleased, and proud, to share with you that Lampton has performed, again,  ‘well above’ the national average and locally we are the highest performing non-faith school - this for the second consecutive year. This link shows the overview of the school’s in Hounslow. https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/schools-by-type?step=default&table=schools&region=313&geographic=la&for=secondary

This consistently high achievement is due to the hard work of all members of our Lampton School community - students, families, Trustees and staff. Congratulations to all and we look forward to achieving even higher standards next summer!

With best wishes for the week ahead,

Stephen Davis

New punctuality system

Students have been told in assembly about the new late system. Students will receive a late community service if they are late to school or to lessons. The community service is 30 mins- 3.10-3.40pm (can be extended to 60 minutes a full hour if a student has been late during the school day for this length of time). During the community service the students will complete one of the following tasks:

Tasks:

  • Reading and comprehension activity on the importance of punctuality - mirror structure of TT non fiction - Priority 1: ‘We are a reading school’.

  • Punctuality reflection sheet - mirror structure of RR sheet - Priority 2: Character -  Responsibility.

  • Write letter to parents/carers indicating they have reflected on behaviour and next steps - administrative staff to post - Priority 2: Character - Responsibility.

Parents will receive a text everyday informing them that their child is in Community Service due to poor punctuality.

Basketball success

On Thurs 19th October the Under-14 boys basketball team made up of mostly the Year 9 basketball team took on national schools champions Christ’s School of Richmond.

With only five players available from Lampton, we went up against a 12 player roster from Christ. Our Lampton heroes defeated Christ’s resoundingly with a final score of 73-52. Amaru led as top scorer with an impressive 25 points in the match. The win places Lampton School at the very top of the national schools boys u14 league table, representing a step closer to the national finals. A special shout out to the team: Amaru, Jibran, Promise, Baraa, Adyan

Events in the Middle East

We are aware that many in the school community have been deeply affected by events in the Middle East over the past few weeks. In assembly next week we will be marking the theme of remembrance, and will reflect on conflicts past and present, and hold a minute's silence to reflect on all casualties of war.

As a school, we are legally required to ensure that we are impartial in how we discuss political issues with students - and we hope that our discussions of the issues promote understanding of various viewpoints. To promote community cohesion, we do not allow students to display flags or other political symbols. Any infractions will be dealt with as per our behaviour and uniform policies.

Safeguarding briefing: Intra-Familial Child Sexual Abuse

Often when we consider the risks to our children from others - we assume that the greatest dangers is posed by strangers, typically outside the home. However, in reality approximately two-thirds of all child sexual abuse reported to the police is perpetrated by a family member or someone close to the child. Where research has recorded the gender of perpetrators of intra-familial child sexual abuse, the vast majority have been found to be male, although abuse by women does occur. In around a quarter of cases, the perpetrator is under 18.

Child sexual abuse in the family is rarely an isolated occurrence and may go on for many years. Much abuse in the family remains undisclosed. Children may fear their abuser, not want their abuser to get into trouble, feel that the abuse was ‘their fault’, and feel responsible for what will happen to their family if they tell. Abuse by a family member may be particularly traumatic because it involves high levels of betrayal, stigma and secrecy.

This guidance from the NSPCC offers parents much more information about how to protect your child. If you have concerns about your child or any other child, please do not hesitate to contact the safeguarding team safeguarding@lampton.org.uk.

New menu in the Dining Hall

Today is the first day of a tasty new menu in the Dining Hall! Please talk with your child about the food on offer and which new flavours they can try. Discover more about our catering provision from Cucina on the school website. A reminder that all students must have their Lampton School ID card to purchase food from the canteen. Those without the card will not be allowed access until the latter part of break and lunchtime.
