Lampton School - Week 7

Monday 16th October

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the seventh week of the Autumn Term 2023 - the last week of this half-term.  It’s Week A and our whole school assemblies are being led by Ms Ali (Head of Year 9) and students on Black History Month - focusing on this year’s theme of ‘Celebrating our Sisters’.

School closes at the usual time of 3.10pm on Friday 20th October for the half-term break and we resume at the usual time of 8.40am on Monday 30th October - a key date for Y11 as this is when the first round of their Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs) begin. So, for our Y11 students the week’s break needs to be used productively to prepare for the PPEs - these are important exams to assist in preparation for next summer. Results will be shared and discussed at the Parents’ Evening on Thursday 14th December. Another key date for Y11 students is Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 9th November at 5pm.

All students at Lampton are issued with an ID card when they join the school. One function of this is as a payment card for purchasing food in school. By not having a card and asking till operators to find a student’s account on the system increases queuing time in the canteen at break and lunch for everybody. Students will be asked to show duty staff their card to access the canteen and those who do not have a card will not be allowed into the canteen until the last part of break and lunch so as not to prolong the queuing for everybody else. Replacement cards are available from Student Services - it is a student's responsibility to request this and the ID card is now part of the equipment check in Tutor Period. Please ensure your child has their card each day - this is one small way to make break and lunchtimes smoother for all members of our community; a simple way to show our school values of respect and integrity.

I am pleased to report that our trip to Berlin last week was a great success with staff and students returning home safe and sound. This week sees local based trips in London to the Victoria Embankment, Tate Modern and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Please see below about the in-school enrichment which is taking place.

I am pleased to report that our whole school attendance figures remain strong - above the national average at 94%. Y7 knocked Y12 off the top spot this week with 96.6% with Y8 and Y12 on a tie break for second place at 96.4%. A reminder that at Lampton our target for all students is 96%. After half-term we begin a new system regarding punctuality with community service being issued on the day the lateness occurred.

Finally, my thanks for your support this half-term and your continued support of the school. I wish all families a restful break.

With best wishes for the week ahead.

Stephen Davis

Y11 Pre-Public Examinations

All students have been given the PPE exam timetable, the mock exams begin the first day back after half term, 30th October. This can also be accessed here. Your child should arrive promptly to school by 8.30 and go straight to the sports hall where they will meet their tutors.

Students will not be allowed to take mobile phones or apple watches, etc. into the exam hall, these items should be handed to a staff member in the sports hall before the exam. You may choose for your child to leave the items at home for the week of the exams.

If your child does not have an exam they should attend their normal lesson following their school timetable.  They will be allowed to continue with revision during this time.  All students have been told they will need to have with them sufficient material for independent revision.

Please ensure your child is well equipped with stationery for each exam. We wish year 11 all the very best for their first mock exams this academic year.

Safeguarding briefing - social media

Given how quickly young people adopt new technology, it can be confusing to try to understand what social media platforms your children are using, the content they are accessing, and the contact with strangers these platforms facilitate. This guide from the NSPCC outlines steps all parents should be taking when their child has access to any internet enabled device: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/social-media/

If you need any support to understand how your child uses social media, please contact the safeguarding team safeguarding@lampton.org.uk.

Scarves / face coverings - a reminder

Neck scarves may be worn in cold weather. They should be black in colour and made of wool or a similar material, with no visible logos. Scarves should not be worn over the face.

Surgical face masks or similar should only be worn where there is a medical need - students who wish to wear surgical face masks should have a note provided by parents / carers.

Students may wear headscarves for the purpose of religious observation; headscarves must be plain black.

Extra-curricular

This academic year  we will be continuing to expand our extra curricular offerings to provide students with as many opportunities to develop their character outside of lessons. We offer a wide range of clubs which include sports, performing arts and academic activities - more information and a timetable can be found on the year group google classroom pages and the Lampton School website.

The NCS programme is government funded, and so free of charge. Students can sign up here: https://wearencs.com/

Y11 Revision Guides

In addition to online resources, often students find it useful to have a paper-based revision guide to study from. Where students receive free school meals (or have done in the past), students will this week be receiving a set of free revision guides.
