Tuesday 19th April

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our weekly update for the first week of the Summer Term 2022. I hope that you and your families were able to enjoy a restful and relaxing break.

This half-term our thoughts are very much focused on the forthcoming Public Examinations for Y11 and Y13, especially as this is the first year that these exams are taking place since 2019. Myself and Mr Smale spoke to Y11 in assembly on the last day of the Spring Term reminding students of the importance of using their holiday time wisely to prepare for the exams and Ms Jackson and the Sixth Form team did the same with Y13. It is imperative that students make use of every opportunity to support their progress over the coming weeks - as a school we will be offering support and also giving advice about how families can support at home too. If you need advice in supporting your child, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The start of a new time affords us the opportunity to have a fresh start, to reset expectations and to strive for improvement. As a school, we will be focusing on uniform and positive behaviour, with our tutor period theme being ‘safe’. Please take time to read the section below and reinforce to your child/children our expectations about behaviour, especially the importance of self-discipline and self-regulation. These standards of course apply on the way to and from school each day when students are representing the Lampton community in our local area. Thank you for your support.

With best wishes for the week ahead.

Stephen Davis

Students observing Ramadan

In the penultimate week of last term, Ms Farooq led the whole school assembly to mark the commencement of Ramadan, and to share her personal experience of leading change in the community through ‘the Cake Campaign’ for people affected by the war in Syria. As Ramadan now continues through the first part of the summer term, we wish to support students in their religious observance.

As ever, we have a prayer space available for students during both the Y7-9 and Y10-13 lunch, and if students receive free school meals a special arrangement is in place during Ramadan, with a packed lunch available for collection from the canteen. As the Y7-9 lunch ends at 1.10, we know that this may be too early to complete the dhuhr prayer, and so if students wish we will make provision for students at the end of the day to use classrooms to complete the prayer.

Uniform expectations

As the weather has now improved, we have reverted to our full school uniform policy, with coats off in lessons. A reminder also that students should not wear jewellery to school, apart from a pair of plain earrings, or items that are required for religious observance. Please ensure that your child is wearing full school uniform - please see our uniform page for further information.

Behaviour - the Reflection Room

Following a review of our behaviour systems, we are changing the way that the Reflection Room operates. Students are sent to the Reflection Room as a sanction if they break one of ‘non-negotiables’, such as refusing to follow an instruction, swearing or being racist, homophobic or sexist. Students may also be sent to the Reflection Room if there has been a serious incident and the behaviour team is investigating. Students in the Reflection Room sit at individual booths and complete work set by the various departments to ensure continuity in the study programme.

In order to give more time for restorative conversations to happen, students who are in the Reflection Room will now stay behind until 3.30pm. If a student is sent to the Reflection Room, a text message will be sent home and the Head of Year will make contact with the parent to discuss the incident and agree follow up actions.

Easter Basketball camp: Richard Rip Hamilton visit, Report by Coach Mike

During the Easter Holiday I ran my usual basketball camp which was supported by the Hounslow Council and Vice President of the NBA in Europe Neal Meyers. This was the very first time the camp had gained any type of funding from the council and also the third time having the NBA involved in our camp project. The council funding which is a part of the Marcus Rashford free school meals campaign and meant that children from less well-off families could attend camp for free and also get a free meal while at camp.

In total 60 children signed up for camp and all 60 attended with 20 coming from Lampton School for the full 5 days of camp which ran from 10am-3pm with loads of skilled based coaching fun activities and games. During the week the NBA sent over 100 basketballs and NBA t-shirts to give out and use. The NBA arranged a special visit from basketball champion Richard Rip Hamilton. Richard Rip played 14 years in the NBA league for the Washington Wizards and the Detroit Pistons where he ended up winning a NBA championship and was selected three times to play in the NBA All-Star game. Rip Hamilton was also a former teammate with Michael Jordan when he was first drafted into the league by the Washington Wizards back in the NBA in 1999.

Richard Rip Hamilton’s visit to our Easter camp marked the very first time a high profile professional NBA basketball player visited a local basketball camp here in the UK in the past 20 years and his visit was all thanks to Neal Meyers vice president to help show support for local basketball Coach Ali who sadly passed away.

Rip spent over an hour at camp coaching the kids and speaking to them about following their dreams no matter how hard those dreams might seem and never giving up on them. Richard Rip Hamilton gave a moving and inspirational speech which helped to motivate and encourage everyone young person at camp, the speech can be viewed here.
