Lampton News - Week 27

Posted on Mar 28th 2022

Monday 28th March

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our weekly update for the thirteenth, and final, week of the Spring Term 2022.

Last week saw our excellent school production of ‘Matilda’ take place. It was so good to see students performing after the last two years of Covid. On Wednesday 23rd we were joined for the matinee by students from Alexandra and Westbrook primary schools who had a fantastic time! Both Thursday and Friday evening the audience was filled with a large number of students, families and staff who enjoyed seeing members of our Lampton community perform with great confidence. Many congratulations to Miss Bowater, the performing arts team and all students and staff who worked so hard to make the show a great success. Plans are already afoot for next year’s production!

In this week’s newsletter we have a number of important items related to the end of this term and the start of the Summer Term; FSM vouchers; an important safeguarding briefing related to exam stress and an update on enrichment in Y12.

As it is Week B, our year assemblies are taking place. As is usual at the end of term, the focus is on praise and celebrating effort and achievement. The winners of the prestigious subject praise badges will be announced in each year as well as a celebration of the highest number of ‘Shout Outs’ - do ask your child/children how they have done.

‘Living with Covid’ is still challenging with a high number of our community, staff and students isolating. Thank you for your on-going support as we navigate our way, together, through these times. We call to mind our values of excellence, respect and integrity to ensure that our work remains focused and we work in partnership to achieve the best outcomes for our students.

I wish you and your families a restful holiday and Ramadan Mubarak to those members of our community observing the Holy Month of Ramadan starting next weekend.

With best wishes,

Stephen Davis

Safeguarding Briefing

As we enter the exam season, we know that parents have a crucial role to play in supporting their children in Year 11 and Year 13 with mitigating examination stress. We often talk to students about how feeling a little bit stressed with exams approaching is both normal, and useful to help motivate and persevere with revision. At the same times, too much stress is both counter-productive and detrimental to students’ wellbeing. With that in mind, we would like to share with you some helpful guidance from the charity Young Minds: https://www.youngminds.org.uk/parent/a-z-guide/exam-time/

As ever, if you have any concerns about the wellbeing or safety of your child, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the Safeguarding team, via safeguarding@lampton.org.uk

Year 12s have been enriched!

The year 12s have been very busy this year, taking advantage of the plethora of opportunities available to them outside of Lampton. Students are actively encouraged to apply and take part in enrichment activities that help them to broaden their knowledge and understanding of ‘Life After Lampton’ and to help them progress onto higher education. Some of the enrichment prospects this year have included the Sutton Trust Summer School, NCS, Kings K+ Programme, Speakers for Schools as well as a huge number of work experiences and taster courses advertised on our year 12 Google Classroom page.

We recently conducted a survey throughout the year group and have found 67% of the year group have taken part in an enrichment activity, with the biggest proportion of students taking part in work experience opportunities (30.5%), NCS (16.3%) and taster courses and masterclasses at universities (13%). In addition, out the students who have taken part in an enrichment activity, 60% have completed more than one.

In addition to this, our Higher Education Course Coordinator, Ms Hunt organised two very well attended events throughout March, which included Barrister James Peacock to speak about his education pathway and having a career in Law and Ex-Lampton student Moni Sandhu to speak about her life as a medical student and Junior Doctor.

These opportunities will undoubtedly help to shape their future by giving them a good understanding on the courses available to them, how to apply and of course a head start when writing their UCAS personal statements.

Year 12 Theatre Performance!

On Thursday 31st March, year 12 will also be watching a theatre performance of ‘He Said She Said’ based around social media and the escalation of conflict. This event will be held in school and will help to address some of the concerns students in year 12 have around social media.
