MFL

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW STATEMENT Values statement: The Modern Languages team aims to equip students with a good understanding of the vocabulary and structures of the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) that they study, so that they can use these languages independently and creatively. We are currently teaching French, German, and Spanish. Our students learn to be confident, accurate and articulate linguists, engaged with the cultures of the countries whose languages they study. Students have five hours of language tuition a fortnight in Years 7-11. Homework is set weekly, and usually consists of one learning and one written piece of homework We encourage students to work out meanings for themselves, paying attention to detail and noticing patterns and connections. The skills they develop through learning a foreign language are important and are transferable across all subjects and disciplines. These are not only linguistic skills but also important social and intellectual skills as well. In addition, we are also pleased to offer our students the opportunity to study a heritage language though extra-curricular lessons (after school).

4) HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD Year 7 – 9

  • A good vocabulary and understanding of grammar is key to success in languages. Even if you speak no French, German or Spanish you can still help your child to learn spellings by using their vocabulary sheet to test their learning. This sheet lists each word in English and in French/ German or Spanish, and is in your child’s neat book.
  • All students will be set vocabulary learning homework on a bespoke online learning tool called Vocab Express – for this it is essential that they have online access, via a PC, tablet or smartphone. Please get your child to show you their scores and check their progress regularly.
  • It also important to encourage your child to use their notes in books where teachers regularly feedback on how to improve even further.

 Year 10-11

  • As we do not use a textbook, your child will be asked to obtain a folder for lesson and revision material. These will be vital when exams are approaching. Encouraging your child to keep their folder in order and to keep up with written homework will make a huge difference to their progress and success.
